Sixth Grade Hooligans

No more “Good Morning Miss Roberts!” followed by a big hug each morning. Now I am worried that I will be faced with an “Oh hey” or a weak smile. At the beginning of the term I was devastated to learn that I was placed in a sixth grade classroom for my Winter Practicum as a teaching program student. I was in a first grade classroom the term before and absolutely loved it! The students loved going to school and had so much enthusiasm. Honestly I was nervous about my placement in the sixth grade classroom.

My first day went much better than I thought, however, and the crazy sixth graders are starting to grow on me. They are funny, understand my jokes and sarcasm, and they are independent. Last Friday, one of the students led a craft for the class. They made the most adorable little reindeer out of wine corks. I even got to make one! The class is a little rough, and I know I will have my work cut out for me when I teach my practice lessons, but it will be worth it!

This week’s lesson:
Don’t be afraid to try something new!

  1. No worries Your sixth graders don't look too scary :) lol!!! You will do great this term and learn a lot. Who knows, you might find that you love the middle school grades. What unit will you be teaching? Well, I myself am absolutely loving Imbler!!! It's such a cute little farm school :) I kinda heart third grade!!!

  2. I was placed in sixth grade last term and I was nervous as well, but it turned out to be great! I LOVE sixth grade because, like you said, they're funny, they understand sarcasm, and they're independent. I'm in a second grade class now and it is ok, but it's not my favorite. Too bad we couldn't trade! I'm glad you are getting used to it and that's it's all "growing" on you!

  3. I have taught sixth grade for many years now, and I love them. I could not imagine teaching any other grade - it's such gateway year, and your influence is really huge. Keep us posted!

  4. I was in the fifth grad last term and I decided that I really enjoy the older grades. They youngsters are very sweet, but it seems like you can do so much more with the older kids. Good luck!

  5. I had my student teaching in sixth grade instead of third as originally planned. I was terrified at first. There were good days and bad. My first observation lesson went totally wrong. But I know that this experience made me a better teacher. When I started teaching and had to teach sixth grade, I wasn't afraid. Having taught in different grades I would say that I like third grade the most. That's where I am now.

  6. I've taught every grade from first to seventh and I'm in sixth now. I, too, was terrified of the big kids...until I got here. I've been in sixth grade for six years and I love them...oh, there are days, but sixth graders have such personality! Be honest with them. Show them who you are. SEE them! It will be ok...it will be GREAT! I look forward to hearing about your journey!
